Rockhill Farm is a great place to form a base to further explore the highlands due to its location. Within 1.5 hours you can reach the Loch Lomond National Park, Inveraray, Oban, Glencoe Mountain Resort, and many other popular attractions. On the farm itself, you can enjoy some quiet time with noise only from the wildlife or the occasional passing boat. There are plenty of walking routes around the farm and things to explore.
The Loch
Loch Awe is the longest freshwater loch in Scotland, measuring 25 miles from end to end. Just south of the farm at Portsonnachan is the historical crossing point for people and livestock as it is one of the narrowest points on the loch. The Transatlantic Cable was laid across this point in 1955. At the northern end of the loch is one of the most photographed Castles in Scotland, Kilchurn Castle.
Boats
Rockhill farm has a jetty in the main bay and is a great place to moor a small boat. Boats can be hired from Loch Awe boats which is conveniently placed just to the west of the farm.
Fishing
Guests at Rockhill farm have permission to fish in both the loch and the smaller lochan just outside the main farm gate. The main bay of the farm is one of the best fishing spots on Loch Awe. Brown trout and pike are the most common types of fish caught by our guests. A 6lb brown trout was recently caught off the jetty. The Lochan was stocked with brown trout and has since been a great spot to fish.
Scenery
The view from the Rockhill farm residences is spectacular. Directly across the other side of the loch is the famous Ben Crauchan dam – which has recently featured in the Star Wars TV series “Andor”. Directly in front of the loch are two islands and a small man-made island, or crannog. The best view on the estate can be found on top of the small hill just to the southwest of the Gamekeepers cottage. For the lucky ones, the Northern Lights can be seen from both cottages.
Wildlife
Rockhill farm is home to a diverse variety of wildlife. Early in the morning otters can sometimes be spotted on the shore of the loch. Throughout the day you may be lucky enough to spot deer, eagles, rabbits, geese, pheasants, ducks, owls and many different species of smaller birds. Cuckoos also live in the small forest next to the farm and can occasionally be heard throughout the day. In the early evening bats can be seen coming out to feed.
Highland Cows
Aside from the diverse wildlife living on the grounds, Rockhill Farm is also regularly visited by the highland cows and sheep from Cladich Fold. Cladich is an award-winning livestock breeder and has exported many of their bulls all around the world, as far as Australia!
